Competition Conditions
1.0 Invitation
Nationwide Building Society invites submissions from both
students of Architecture and students of related disciplines
for an open ideas competition to develop strategies for the
individual home as well as the wider community. Emphasis
can be placed on refurbishment as well as, or as an alternative
to, new build.
2.0 Intention to build
It is not the intention of the sponsor to build any of the winning schemes.
3.0 Eligibility
The competition is open to both students of Architecture and students of related disciplines who have not yet completed the RIBA Part Three Examination, or its equivalent. Individual, team and multi-disciplinary entries are all encouraged.
No member or employee of the sponsoring body nor the assessors nor any partner, associate or employee of them shall be eligible to compete or assist a competitor.
4.0 Questions
Any questions which competitors wish to ask must be addressed to the RIBA Competitions Office, 6 Melbourne Street, Leeds LS2 7PS, to arrive before Friday 21 November 2009. An explanatory memorandum based on the questions submitted will be circulated to all competitors and will form part of the Competition Conditions. Oral questions will not be accepted.

6.0 Submission of Designs
The submission of each competitor is to be contained in a single package and is to be sent, carriage paid, addressed to the RIBA Competitions Office, 6 Melbourne Street, Leeds LS2 7PS, clearly marked ‘Nationwide Student Competition’.
Phase 1 submissions must arrive no later than 14.00pm on 27 January 2010. Phase 2 submissions must arrive no later than 14.00pm on 21 April 2010.
Competitors requiring proof of delivery should enclose in their package a stamped, sealed envelope addressed to a third party (to preserve anonymity). This will be posted upon receipt of submission.
7.0 Anonymity
All entries will be judged anonymously. Any entry that has identifying marks (including logos, text, insignia, or images that could be used to identify the submission’s author) will be automatically disqualified.
Each entry must have the unique registration number issued upon registration prominently displayed on the front face(s) of each and every page/board of your submission material. Please refer to section 8.0 below ‘How to Register’.
A successful competitor must be able to satisfy the assessors that he/she is the bona fide author of the design he/she has submitted.
The sponsor will exercise all reasonable care but will not be responsible for loss or damage to drawings which may occur either in transit or during exhibition, storage or packing. Competitors are advised to retain copies of the designs submitted.
8.0 Prize Money
There will be awards for each of three categories:
• Refurbishment/Regeneration.
• New Build.
• Community/Neighbourhood.
The following prizes will be awarded for each of the three categories:
• First Prize: £3,000
• Second Prize: £1,500
• Third Prize: £1,000
At the discretion of the assessors, the prize fund may be aggregated and divided among a different number of competitors, but an order of merit will be indicated.
9.0 Competition Programme
In conjunction with the RIBA, the sponsor has established the following programme, which may be subject to variation:

10.0 Copyright
The ownership of copyright in the work of all competitors will be in accordance with the Copyright and Patent Act 1988.
11.0 Announcement of Award and Exhibition
The competition results will be published after notification has been given to all competitors.
A prize giving ceremony will be held at RIBA Headquarters, London on 8 June 2010. The event will be hosted by Wayne Hemingway, MBE, Hemingway Design, to which all prize winners will be invited to attend.
Public exhibitions of the winning schemes will be held at a number of Schools of Architecture following the announcement of the results. Details of the venues will be confirmed by the RIBA Competitions Office.
Exhibitions of the winning schemes are also expected to be held and at other regional venues.
12.0 Publicity
The sponsor, Nationwide Building Society, may publish illustrations of any design, either separately or together with other designs with or without explanatory text.
Competitors should note that for the purposes of exhibitions and publicity relating to the competition Nationwide reserves the right to amend a submission so that publicised designs do not infringe third parties’ intellectual property rights.
Competitors should note that they may be required to attend press/media interviews to discuss their competition entry and design submission.
